International Broadcast Conference 2024 – The Recap

Last week, our team had the privilege of attending the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC), one of the largest and most prestigious events in the broadcasting industry. Our presence at the event was done by the Transmixr for the team, with Grace Dinan, Marie Hospital, Bryan Dunphy, Aljosa Smolic, Carmela Asero, and Eoghan Hynes representing Transmixr at the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) stand.

The buzz at the EBU stand was palpable, with over 60 visitors stopping by to learn about our innovative solution for the broadcast industry. We were thrilled to see such interest and excitement as attendees tested out the headsets and engaged with the technology firsthand. It was an incredible opportunity to showcase what we’ve been working on, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

Our involvement at IBC didn’t stop there. Grace Dinan delivered an insightful talk at the IBC Accelerator challenge titled “Evolution of the Control Room, Leveraging XR, Voice, AI and HTML-based Graphics Solutions.” Alongside the participation of the EBU itself, this challenge brought together broadcasters – including several EBU Members (BBC, ITN, SVT, TV2 Denmark and Yle) – and technology partners (TinkerList, NxtEdition, Google and Vodafone), who collaborated with TRANSMIXR partners: Technological University of the Shannon (TUS), TG4 (another EBU Member), Trinity College Dublin, HSLU Lucerne University, Web Lyzard Technology, CERTH, MODUL Technology, Immersion, and Satore Studio. Theproof-of-concept (PoC) demonstrations were showcased at IBC2024 in Amsterdam, including on the EBU booth. These PoCs highlighted the potential of virtual control rooms to redefine live production workflows, offering broadcasters greater agility, scalability, and cost-effectiveness, attracting a captivated audience eager to learn about the latest advancements in this field.

Additionally, Grace co-hosted the “Design Your Weapons Against Disinformation” session, in collaboration with the EBU, as well as BBC, Paramount Global, CBS News, CBC, ITN, IET, Associated Press, and other partners to develop a collaborative approach to combating fake news. Central to this initiative is the TRANSMIXR dashboard, developed in partnership with Web Lyzard Technology, AFP, TUS, and RTV Slovenija. This powerful tool utilizes AI to source, analyse, and report breaking news stories, providing journalists and fact-checking teams with the information they need to verify news content and debunk disinformation. The dashboard features a searchable knowledge hub and collaboration solutions that facilitate knowledge sharing, verification status labelling, and co-creation. According to IBC numbers the Evolution of the Control Room stage presentation was the most attended session, and the most watched session as VOD on IBC365. This information makes us a very proud team.

In addition to our hands-on demonstrations and talks, our partner Aljosa Smolic from Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts presented a technical paper titled “VV-glTF: Efficient Streaming of Volumetric Video.” This paper explores cutting-edge research in the streaming of volumetric video, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in immersive media. It’s always inspiring to see our team contributing to the academic and technological development of the industry.

It was certainly a packed week of activity and collaboration, but the impact we made at IBC was undeniable. Our team’s collective effort brought attention to the future of broadcasting, and we left the event energised and excited for the next chapter.
