Reflecting on the Climate on Culture Conference 2024

Climate on Culture Conference

The Idaho Museum of International Diaspora (IMID) recently hosted its second annual global conference, “Climate on Culture” from September 18-21, 2024, in Galway, Ireland. This flagship event, organised in partnership with TRANSMIXR partners – TG4, and supported by Galway Culture Company, brought together global leaders, educators, and cultural practitioners. TG4 played a central role in uniting diverse voices and promoting meaningful dialogue on the intersection of climate and culture.

Event Highlights

The conference successfully gathered cross-sector leaders, educators, policymakers, and practitioners to discuss the impact of climate on culture and its significance for diasporas within museums, educational institutions, corporations, and governments. The programme included foundational dialogues, film screenings, immersive learning experiences, and interactive workshops.

The conference provided a multidisciplinary forum to #LearnDiscoverExplore how climate influences culture and how cultural institutions can respond to these impacts. It examined “climate” from two perspectives: external environmental conditions and the prevailing cultural, social, political, and economic climates that shape our world. Discussions explored creative and sustainable opportunities for transformational change, highlighting the critical role of culture in climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Outcomes

The conference deepened the understanding of cultural preservation in climate-affected diasporas, demonstrating the essential role of cultural institutions in showcasing these cultures. There was a strong emphasis on fostering cross-sector collaboration to address climate challenges creatively and sustainably.

Alliances were forged among participants, facilitating connections to work together across borders and disciplines. This collaboration aims to raise further awareness of the discussed topics and develop educational and cultural initiatives in the months and years to come.

TRANSMIXR Workshop

The TRANSMIXR workshop was particularly well received, showcasing the News Broadcast Use case concept. Attendees expressed excitement about trying out the virtual studio and gallery. Feedback highlighted the uniqueness of the experience with many interested in its future development. Participants from journalism, museums, and cultural institutions recognised immediate applications of the technology in their storytelling practices.

Overall, the Climate on Culture Conference 2024 successfully stimulated lively debate and established a foundation for future collaborations, aiming for a sustainable future through cultural engagement. TRANSMIXR was proud to be part of this important initiative, thanks to our partners from TG4.
