At the 2025 International Journalism Festival in Perugia, Italy, TRANSMIXR captivated attendees with its innovative approach to journalism. From April 9 to 13, our partners Grace Dinan and Eoghan Hynes (Technological University of the Shannon), Sabrina Povsic Stimec and Natasa Zanuttini (RTV Slovenia) Alexandre Grosbois (AFP) and Tessa Pierre (Sparknews) hosted a hands-on workshop titled “TRANSMIXR: come and experience how XR and AI are transforming news! on April 11.

The workshop welcomed around 15 participants, primarily journalists from Romania, Spain, Ukraine, and the Netherlands. It began with an overview of the TRANSMIXR project and its suite of journalism tools, followed by an engaging discussion on the role of AI in media. While AI offers advantages like speed and idea generation, attendees emphasised the importance of caution and the need for transparency and human verification in its application.

The session began with a collaborative icebreaker, where journalists shared their thoughts on the challenges and opportunities of integrating AI and XR into journalistic workflows using post-its and whiteboards. This was followed by a VR demonstration, offering an immersive experience of the Slovenian Ski Jumping World Cup in Planica. Participants then explored the XR Control Room, showcasing how immersive technologies can support storytelling and editorial decision-making. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive—participants were engaged, curious, and enthusiastic about how these tools could fit into their future workflows.

In the second part of the session, attendees split into smaller groups to explore additional VR content, including a glimpse into the “newsroom of the future,” and tested various tools from the journalism toolbox. Participants expressed strong interest and were eager to learn how and under what conditions they could access these tools.

Our partners expressed that the feedback from the workshop was overwhelmingly positive, with participants showing strong interest in how these tools could enhance their future workflows. The discussions highlighted the growing potential of AI and immersive technologies in journalism, underlining their role in shaping the future of the industry.
